Leonora Lydia Lagendyk (Spomer) was born March 31, 1925 in Freeman, South Dakota to Philip and Lydia (Treiber) Spomer and died October 2, 2019 at the age of 94. She was baptized on Easter Sunday, April 19, 1925 and was confirmed in her faith in 1939 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Freeman, South Dakota.
Leonora received her grade school education at St. Paul Lutheran School in Freeman. She graduated from Freeman High School in 1943 and received her teaching certificate from Freeman Junior College. She taught at the Zion Lutheran School of Avon, South Dakota for 3 years.
While in Avon she met a handsome young man, Nelson Lagendyke, who was home on leave from the air force. They were married on June 20, 1946. God blessed them with three daughters; Bonnie, Linda and Sherri.
The family moved to California where Leonora taught at Canoga Park Lutheran School for 2 years. In 1960 the family moved back to Avon, South Dakota where they reopened the Variety Store which was previously owned by John and Johanna Lagendyk, Nelson’s parents. During this time
Leonora attended some evening classes and summer classes in Springfield, South Dakota and taught at various rural schools in the Avon area. When she and her husband retired in 1997, they enjoyed traveling. Leonora loved her Savior Jesus Christ and was devoted to her church. She served as Bible School coordinator, taught Sunday School for 30 years, was a choir member and held several offices in the LWML. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary and volunteered her services at Senior meals in Avon. After moving to Freeman in 2006, she helped with Meals on Wheels and clerked at the Et Cetera Shoppe.
Reading was one of her main hobbies. She also loved playing pinochle and liked traveling. She loved her family so much and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her husband Nelson died in June 2005. Leonora moved to Freeman in 2006 to be near her family.
Leonora is survived by her children; Bonnie (Keith) Boese of Sioux Falls, SD; Sherri (Neil) Zachariasen of Freeman, SD; 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 1 sister-in-law Gladys Spomer.
Leonora was preceded in death by her husband Nelson, daughter Linda, parents Philip and Lydia Spomer, brothers Walther, Norman and Eilert Spomer and sister Irene Kleinsasser.
