Henrietta Rhoades, 87, of Freeman, S.D., passed away at Oakview Terrace on March 26. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 3 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Freeman. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Walter Funeral Home in Freeman. Henrietta is survived by her daughter, Susan (Scott) Ruml of Freeman, and two grandchildren.
Henrietta Marie Rhoades, 87, of Freeman S.D., passed away on March 26, 2019 at Oakview Terrace Nursing Home in Freeman after suffering a stroke. She was born Oct. 15, 1931 in Freeman to Henry and Barbara (Walter) Wilde.
She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church. She attended and graduated from St. Paul Lutheran School. After graduation from Freeman High School in 1949, she attended and graduated from South Dakota Beauty Academy.
Henrietta worked at Hertha Pfeiffer’s Beauty Shop for two years before she started her own shop in 1952 at the Millar Hotel in downtown Freeman. She operated her shop for close to 60 years, prior to and after, her husband’s ministry. It was while she had her shop at the Miller Hotel that she met Cecil, who at the time was an English and speech teacher at Freeman High School and lived at the hotel.
Henrietta was united in marriage to Cecil Lee Rhoades on Aug. 29, 1957. Cecil began his studies at Concordia Theological Seminary shortly after the marriage. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter, Susan. While he was attending seminary, Henrietta worked at beauty salons around the Springfield, Ill. area to supplement their income. During their marriage the couple served the congregations of Peace Lutheran in Alma, Mich., as well as White Lake/Plankinton, Trinity and St. Paul Lutheran. The final church they served was Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.
Her husband the Rev. Cecil Lee Rhoades preceded her in death on Aug. 16, 1969 while serving the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Calumet Park, Ill.
The survivors include her daughter, Susan Ruml; Susan’s husband, Scott; and granddaughters: Sarah Ruml, Stefanie Johnson and husband Taylor Johnson.
