William "Bill" Werning, 71, of Clayton passed away on Monday at the Parkston Hospital. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 21st at St Peter's Lutheran Church of Clayton at 10:30 am. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Wednesday with a Prayer Service at 7pm, also at the church. He is survived by his sister Elda (Marvin) Baumiller,  special friend Judy Juhnke and her daughters Tara and Jodi, and numerous nieces and nephews.

William “Bill” Werning was born May 20, 1943 at Methodist Hospital in Mitchell, SD to William J. and Marie (Guericke) Werning. He attended Werning School #99 and graduated from Parkston High School in 1961.  He was baptized on June 17, 1943 by Rev. Luebke and his sponsors were Albert and Mathilda Juhnke. Bill was confirmed May 19, 1957 by Rev. Hildebrandt. Bill was a life time member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and served on numerous boards and held various offices.  Bill joined the National Guard in 1962 and served until 1969. He farmed in the Clayton area his entire life. Bill loved feeding and raising cattle and attended various farm and stock shows. He enjoyed spending time at Hart Ranch and camping.

Bill went to his heavenly home on May 18, 2015 at Avera St. Benedict Hospital two days short of his 72nd birthday.

He is survived by a sister, Elda (Marvin) Baumiller; special friend Judy Juhnke, and her daughters Tara and Jodi; and numerous nephews and nieces.  He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.
